Modal Share vs. Use

Use of a particular mode of transportation is expressed as a sample of people. Modal share percentages reflect how a “pie” of transport modes is split up, always adding up to 100%.

The discrepancy between increasing use and decreasing modal shares is that while real numbers are increasing, they are not keeping pace with population growth and is reflected as decreasing modal share. This suggests an increase in other modes not described here such as transit, walking, and carpooling.


Regarding “Active Transportation” Data

There are inconsistencies in how Active Transportation data has been recorded for Brampton. Some census years separate cycling and walking, while in others they appear merged together as “walking and bicycling”.

An estimate method is being used in the “Bicycle Use” graph above, measuring the average change in Male and Female bicycle use between 1996 to 2011, per census. The method is described below.


Male Example

505 – 365 = 140

/ 3 (incremental census’ published)

= 47 (46.667 rounded)


This change is then applied for the years 2001 and 2006, and assuming the balance of “walked or bicycled” is the estimation of those who walked.
